Cinema Paradiso: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG.
A nostalgic, bittersweet Italian drama about a boy's friendship with the projectionist at his village's movie house, best for young teens who can manage subtitles and a slow pace. The PG is an older rating, and the content sits closer to today's PG-13: a comic scene of teen boys masturbating in the theater, brief bare breasts in old movie clips, a man groping a woman, some s-words and young kids smoking. A fire badly injures a beloved character, and the boy's father is lost in the war. A longer director's cut released later is rated R for sexual content. We suggest 13.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFilm catches fire in the projection booth and a man is badly burned before a boy drags him down the stairs. A mother beats her son, a teacher slaps pupils, a bully punches a teen, and a cow is slaughtered, with blood seen afterward.
Language
ModerateThe subtitles include some s-words plus asshole, son of a bitch, damn, ass and bitch, and a young boy shouts up yours. Movieguide counted about 15 obscenities in the longer director's cut.
Sex and nudity
ModerateOld movie clips flash bare breasts and buttocks, a row of teen boys masturbate in the dark theater with nothing explicit on screen, a man paws a woman in the audience, and men slip behind a curtain with a sex worker. The director's cut adds more.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateA pair of small boys share a cigarette, schoolboys smoke, adults drink wine and a few get drunk, and smoking is everywhere, true to the period.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe cinema fire is frightening, and a beloved character is left blind. The boy learns his father died in the war, and the film is full of loss and goodbyes, including a funeral, which may bring sensitive kids to tears.

Alfredo urges Salvatore to leave home and never look back. Was that good advice, and what did following it cost him?
