Barbie: parents' guide

11+our pick

Best for ages 11 and up. Rated PG-13 for suggestive references and brief language.

A bright, funny satire that works best for tweens and up, who will catch at least some of its jokes about gender and growing up. Barbie leaves her perfect plastic world for the real one, while Ken discovers patriarchy and brings it back home. The action is cartoonish: a brawl fought with toy sports gear and slapstick chases. Expect jokes about the dolls lacking genitals, double entendres, one bleeped f-word, and Kens drinking a lot of beer. A thread about Barbie's sudden thoughts of death and the pains of being human gives it more weight than the pink look suggests, so about 11 and up fits best.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Mostly slapstick. Barbie punches a man who smacks her backside, dozens of Kens battle with plastic lacrosse sticks and rackets, executives chase Barbie, and a car chase ends with flipped cars but no serious injuries.

Language

Moderate

One f-word ('motherf-') is cut off by a bleep, and the end-credits rap song repeats 'bitch.' Otherwise mild: 'damn' and 'hell' once each, 'crap,' insults such as 'bimbo,' and several uses of 'oh my God.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex or nudity. Jokes about the dolls having no genitals, a running 'beach you off' double entendre, men ogling and catcalling Barbie, skimpy swimsuits, and Ken's repeated, rebuffed attempts to kiss her.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Once Ken brings 'brewskis' to Barbieland, the Kens drink beer from red cups and one jokes about being day drunk. Executives drink at a meeting. No drugs or smoking.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Barbie is suddenly troubled by thoughts of dying, and executives chase her through Mattel headquarters. The existential theme and a reflective ending are more likely to puzzle or move younger kids than scare them.

Worth talking about

Gloria's speech about the impossible expectations placed on women is a good opener: which expectations does your teen feel, and do boys face their own version through Ken?
