Arrested Development: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A fast, layered sitcom for mid-teens and up, watched with a parent who enjoys dark humor. A rich, dishonest family loses everything when the father is jailed for fraud, and the one sensible son tries to hold them together. Most of the content is innuendo and absurd jokes: incest gags about cousins, an Oedipal romance, a perpetually drunk mother, pill-popping, bleeped curses and blurred nudity. Netflix rates the series TV-MA, and revival seasons 4 and 5 lean harder on sex jokes, sex-for-favors plots and sex toys. Little is explicit, but the themes are adult, so 15 is a sensible start.
What's in it
Violence
MildSlapstick only. A character loses his hand to a seal and wears a hook, people trip and fall, a son punches his father in season 5, and a mailman dies in a comic flashback. No blood or realistic fights.
Language
ModerateStrong words are bleeped, often as part of the joke, while 'damn,' 'hell' and 'bitch' are heard freely. Plugged In counted two bleeped f-words and a bleeped s-word in a season 5 episode, plus frequent misuse of God's name.
Sex and nudity
ModerateLots of innuendo, implied sex with partly dressed couples in bed, a supporting character who flashes her chest (blurred), and running gags about a cousin crush and an Oedipal romance. The Netflix seasons add sex toys and sex-for-favors plots.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe family's mother drinks constantly as a running joke, smokes, and takes prescription pills recreationally, and others get drunk. Memory-erasing pills, likened by one review to date-rape drugs, recur, and drunk driving comes up.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing frightening. A father in prison, fraud and family betrayal are all played for laughs, and the tone stays light and absurd throughout.

Worth talking about
Almost every Bluth lies, schemes and manipulates, and the show plays it for laughs. Ask your teen why awful people can be fun to watch, and whether Michael is as decent as he thinks.
