Bridget Jones's Diary: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language and some strong sexuality.
A funny, rueful British rom-com for older teens, rated R mainly for language. Thirtysomething Bridget resolves to fix her life and ends up torn between her charming, caddish boss and a stiff lawyer. Expect more than 30 f-words by one count, frequent sex talk, a brief sex scene and several scenes of the couple in bed, and heavy drinking and smoking treated as part of the fun. The boss's behavior toward her at work would count as harassment today, and a comic fistfight draws blood. We suggest 15 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA clumsy fistfight between two men, with punches, kicks and a crash through a plate-glass window, draws blood but is played for laughs. A movie clip on TV shows a woman being shot dead.
Language
StrongStrong and frequent: one count found more than 30 f-words, six s-words and about a dozen milder curses, plus British slang like 'bloody,' 'wanker' and 'shag.'
Sex and nudity
ModerateSex drives the plot: kissing, a brief sex scene, Bridget and Daniel in bed several times, and lots of underwear. There is brief male nudity, a nude woman covers herself with a book, Daniel squeezes Bridget's bottom uninvited, and oral and anal sex are mentioned.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateBridget and her friends drink and smoke constantly. She drinks alone until she passes out, gets drunk and falls out of a taxi, and downs shots in a row. No drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing scary. The hardest moments are public humiliations and a romantic betrayal, all handled with humor.
Worth talking about
Daniel's suggestive behavior toward Bridget at work is played as flirtation: how would it be seen in a workplace today, and why has that view changed?
