Arco: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for action/peril, mild thematic elements and a brief injury image.

A gentle, gorgeous French animated time-travel story that works best for kids around 8 and up who can handle some sad goodbyes. Arco, a boy from the far future, crash-lands in 2075 and befriends Iris, a girl raised mostly by a robot caretaker while her parents work far away. Expect storm and wildfire peril, a head wound that bleeds down a child's face, a guard knocked out cold, and an emotional loss involving the beloved robot. There's no profanity or drinking; a bath scene briefly shows Iris's bare chest in a nonsexual way. The peril, injuries and tearjerker ending are why we suggest 8.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Arco's crash leaves a gash that bleeds down his face; the robot later stitches a wound while Iris winces, though the stitching itself isn't shown. A guard is knocked out cold, the kids fight a swarm of robots, and a falling tree wrecks the caretaker robot.

Language

None

No profanity. Only mild insults and exclamations such as shut up, stupid, gross, shoot and holy smokes.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Arco and Iris share an innocent crush, a hug and a kiss on the cheek. A bath scene briefly shows Iris's bare, undeveloped chest; it isn't sexual, but some parents will notice it.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, drugs or smoking shown. The only mention is an adult saying a bet has won them a bottle of champagne.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Violent storms and a fast-moving wildfire endanger children, and Iris and Arco crash into the burning forest and are found unconscious. The robot caretaker is crushed and left behind, and the family farewells and reunions are strongly emotional.

Worth talking about

The film imagines a future shaped by climate change and by people leaning on robots to care for their kids. What choices made today does it suggest could change that future?
