17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence, language and some sexuality/nudity.

A brutal home-invasion slasher for adults and mature older teens who like their horror bloody. A family reunion at a remote country house turns into a siege when attackers in animal masks start picking people off with crossbows, axes and machetes, and one guest with survival skills fights back. Expect a steady stream of graphic kills, about 30 f-words, an opening sex scene with a bare breast, other brief topless moments, and the family's mother among the victims. The relentless gore and stalking dread are why we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant and graphic: arrows in heads and backs, throats cut with wire, a skull smashed with a meat mallet, a machete to the eye, plus axes, screwdrivers and a kitchen blender used as weapons. Blood sprays and pools throughout.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted about 30 f-words and roughly five s-words, plus misuses of God's name. Common Sense also notes 'damn' and 'oh my God.'

Sex and nudity

Moderate

The film opens with a couple having sex, with a bare breast shown, and other women are briefly topless. A woman tries to seduce her boyfriend beside a murdered relative's body, and he pushes her away. No explicit sex beyond the opening.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The family drinks wine, whiskey and beer at dinner, and one young woman smokes. The mother takes a pill before bed, Vicodin is asked for, and a wounded man is given a handful of painkillers that leave him groggy.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Masked killers stalk the family through a dark, isolated house for most of the film, with jump scares, people trapped and screaming, and bodies discovered one after another.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Erin stays calm and relies on skills from her unusual upbringing while others panic. Talk about what helps someone think clearly in a crisis, and what the film says about family loyalty.
