Wednesday: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.

A darkly funny supernatural mystery that suits many young teens, with more gore than the Addams Family name might suggest. Wednesday investigates monster killings at a boarding school for outcasts, so expect bodies, blood and sudden deaths in most episodes. Season 2 is noticeably darker, with a killer flock of crows, a brain-eating zombie, and cruel experiments at a psychiatric hospital. Language includes several s-words and 'goddamn,' while romance stays at kissing. Bullying is a running theme, a student is killed in the first episode, a minor character's suicide is reported offscreen, and a main character loses both parents in season 2. Best from about 13.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Monster attacks leave mangled, dismembered bodies, and Wednesday sets piranhas on boys in the school pool, filling it with blood. Fights involve swords and bats. Season 2 adds crows pecking out a man's eyes, a scalped serial killer, and a brain-eating zombie.

Language

Moderate

Several s-words, 'goddamn,' 'bitch,' 'hell' and 'crap,' plus cruel name-calling like 'freak' and 'psychopath.' Season 2 sidesteps the f-word with stand-ins such as 'fudged.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

Teens flirt and kiss, including a couple kissing on a dorm bed, and Gomez and Morticia make out and ogle each other in front of their kids. No sex scenes or nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Very little. A first-episode line says one student clique likes getting 'stoned'; the guides report no drinking, smoking or drug use on screen.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

A slavering monster stalks students, corpses and body parts turn up, and drawings show a woman bleeding from the eyes. Season 2 adds being buried alive and a sinister psychiatric hospital. A suicide is reported offscreen in season 1.

  • Death of a child
  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Wednesday prides herself on not caring what anyone thinks, yet her friendships keep pulling her in. Talk about the difference between being independent and shutting people out.
