Beetlejuice: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG.
A gleefully weird Tim Burton comedy that is PG in name only; by today's standards it plays like a PG-13. A young couple die in a car accident and haunt their old house, where they bond with a gloomy teen girl who has written a suicide note. The afterlife is full of gruesome, darkly comic corpses, one with suicide scars on her wrists, and the title ghoul is crude and sexually aggressive: he gropes a woman, heads to a brothel and tries to force the teen into marriage. Expect one or two f-words, several s-words and heavy smoking. Best for teens ready for dark humor about death and suicide.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA couple drown when their car plunges off a bridge. In the afterlife waiting room, a woman exhales smoke through a slit throat, another holds her severed head, and a third has suicide scars on her wrists. A sandworm and a snake-like ghoul attack.
Language
ModerateOne or two uses of the f-word depending on the guide, several s-words, and 'goddamn,' 'dammit,' 'hell' and 'piss off.' Infrequent, but strong for a PG.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo nudity, but crude sexual humor: Beetlejuice grabs his crotch, dry-humps, and stops at a brothel. He forces a kiss on a married woman, gropes her and lifts her skirt, all played for laughs, and schemes to make a teenage girl marry him.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateHeavy cigarette smoking by the adult characters, some drinking, and a passing reference to the sedative Valium.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateAn eerie, ghoulish tone throughout: faces pulled off to show skulls and dangling eyeballs, a ghost pretending to hang from a noose, giant striped sandworms, and characters withering as they are exorcised. Mostly played for laughs.

Worth talking about
Lydia feels so unseen that she writes a suicide note, and the film treats it lightly. Use it to talk about where to turn when someone feels that way.
