Addams Family Values: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for macabre humor.
A pitch-black comedy that suits tweens and young teens who enjoy morbid jokes. Uncle Fester falls for the family's new nanny, a serial killer who marries rich men and murders them for their money, while Wednesday and Pugsley are shipped off to a relentlessly cheerful summer camp they end up wrecking. Nearly everything is played for laughs, including the kids' repeated attempts to kill their baby brother, but expect steady sexual innuendo, a seduction and a honeymoon, plus smoking and drinking. There's no nudity and only mild swearing. The innuendo and the casual treatment of murder are why we suggest 12.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateCartoonish but constant: Wednesday and Pugsley drop a cannonball and a guillotine blade on their baby brother and try to toss him off the roof. Debbie tries to kill Fester in the bath and with a bomb, and campers are tied up during a fiery play.
Language
MildMild: 'damn,' God's name as an exclamation, and 'eat me.' Movieguide also counts a few mild obscenities and one cruder word it doesn't name; no guide we read reports an f-word.
Sex and nudity
ModerateDebbie seduces Fester, his virginity is discussed, and their honeymoon implies sex without showing it. Gomez and Morticia flirt with jokey hints of kink, Fester hides a magazine of scantily clad women, Wednesday and a boy kiss, and she deadpans that babies come from sex.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults smoke cigarettes and Gomez's cigars, and drink vodka and champagne. In one gag, a cocktail is mixed for the baby. No one is shown drunk.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMacabre more than scary: a ghoulish house, a black-widow villain who boasts of killing her parents and husbands, and a climax with the family strapped into electric chairs at gunpoint. Most teens will laugh, but the baby-in-peril gags may upset younger ones.

Worth talking about
The camp counselors push every kid to be cheerful and alike, and Wednesday refuses to play along. When is fitting in worth it, and when is it better to stand apart?
