WandaVision: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-14.

A playful, eerie Marvel puzzle that starts as loving parodies of classic sitcoms and becomes a story about grief, a good pick for tweens who know the films. Early episodes are gentle, with mild innuendo and kisses; later ones bring superhero battles, witchcraft, children in danger, and flashbacks of the heroine losing her parents, her brother and the man she loves. Language and drinking are minimal. The scary parts are creepy rather than gory, but the emotional weight of loss, including a family dog's death, is what younger kids may find hardest. Disney+ rates it TV-14, though most episodes are milder than that.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Starts with almost no violence, then builds to superhero fights, magic blasts and heavy destruction. Flashbacks show a bomb killing young Wanda's parents, a bullet-riddled corpse and Vision's death; a coven is drained of life, and children are choked by magic.

Language

Mild

Very mild: damn, hell, bastard, "kick ass" and an unfinished crude word, plus occasional uses of God's name. Several episodes have no cursing at all.

Sex and nudity

Mild

The married leads kiss, cuddle and slip under the covers with the lights out, and the retro scripts include innuendo, a pregnancy joke and talk of a high libido. A few low-cut and form-fitting outfits; no nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Wine at dinners, a neighbor pulling a flask from her purse, and a joke about getting through things sober. Vision acts tipsy after swallowing gum, played for laughs.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The cheerful sitcom world glitches in unsettling ways, a faceless figure climbs from a manhole, one scene plays like a horror film, and the family dog dies offscreen. The finale shows Wanda's young sons choked by magic and dwells on her losses.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Wanda builds a perfect world to avoid feeling her grief, and other people get hurt. What are healthy ways to cope with loss, and why can pushing pain away backfire?
