The Others: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and frightening moments.

An elegant, slow-burning ghost story for young teens who like suspense more than gore. A mother and her two light-sensitive children live in a dark, isolated house where strange things begin to happen, and the film relies on creeping dread, whispers, a seance and an album of photographs of dead people rather than blood. Language is nearly clean and there is no drinking. The real concern is the ending, which reveals the deaths of children and a suicide, ideas that can trouble viewers long after the credits. Thirteen and up, ideally watched together.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Little is shown and there is no blood: a door slams into a woman's face, a mother lunges at and chokes what she takes for a ghostly old woman, only to find it is her daughter, and a shotgun is fired at unseen figures. A murder-suicide is revealed late but happened off screen.

Language

Mild

Nearly clean: the mother says 'damned' once, and there are several exclamations such as 'oh my God' and 'I swear to God.' No stronger words.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A husband and wife reunited after the war spend a night together; the implied lovemaking is shown only in before-and-after shots of their faces and necks. Most guides report no nudity; one notes brief partial nudity, nothing explicit.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

No drinking or drug use is reported. One detailed guide lists some smoking without saying who or how much; two others report no substances at all.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained, creepy tension: whispers, slamming doors, a seance and a book of photographs of corpses. The children are terrified throughout, and the final revelation about how characters died is deeply disturbing.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Suicide
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The story turns on grief, isolation and denial. Talk about how despair can distort someone's judgment, and where people can turn for help when they feel hopeless.
