The Haunting of Bly Manor: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A melancholy gothic ghost story for older teens that's more heartbreaking than terrifying: in 1987, a young American au pair looks after two orphaned children at an English estate where the dead don't stay put. Gore is limited, but deaths include drowning, strangling, a fall down a well and a man run over. A drowning in the lake is presented as a suicide, and the finale implies a main character takes her own life. Expect frequent f-words, a same-sex romance with couples in bed, a brief mention of child sexual abuse, ghosts possessing children and an emotionally abusive relationship. Nine episodes; best for 15 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Several deaths across nine episodes: a man is strangled and his body dragged into the lake, two people drown, a woman is pushed down a well, a sick woman is smothered, and a man is run over, leaving blood pooling. Mostly brief and not gory.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong language from the adults, with f-words in many episodes, plus s-words, shite, bloody, bitch, whore, goddamn and exclamations of Jesus and God.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Two romances, one between two women, with passionate kissing and couples in bed under sheets. Women undress to bras, a boy leers at his au pair, affairs and oral sex are mentioned, and one episode briefly refers to a parent sexually abusing a child.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink often, and the children's uncle drinks heavily and alone. Several characters smoke, and a possessed boy plays with a lighter and holds a cigarette until an adult takes it away.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Constant dread with faceless ghosts, creepy dolls, decaying bodies and jump scares in most episodes. Ghosts possess the children, one child is nearly drowned, and grief over lost parents and partners runs through every episode.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Death of a parent
  • Domestic abuse
  • Child abuse

Worth talking about

The series suggests grief can trap people if they never face it. How do different characters cope with loss, and which ways seem healthiest?
