The Half of It: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for brief language and teen drinking.
A gentle, thoughtful coming-of-age story that works well for tweens and teens watching with a parent. Shy, brainy Ellie Chu earns money writing classmates' essays and agrees to ghostwrite love letters for a sweet jock to the girl Ellie secretly likes herself. Content is mild for a PG-13: a little cursing with one s-word, a high school party where Ellie gets drunk and throws up, and kisses between teens, including two girls. Classmates mock Ellie, and her widowed father is still grieving her mother. Age 12 reflects the drinking scene and the emotional themes, not anything graphic.
What's in it
Violence
MildVery little: a girl slaps a boy across the face after he embarrasses her in public, someone gets hit, and a teen tumbles off a bike without being hurt. No weapons or blood.
Language
ModerateLight overall. One review counted a single s-word, two each of "hell" and "damn," plus "crap," "badass," a clipped "effin" and an unfinished "what the." "Oh my God" comes up a few times.
Sex and nudity
MildKissing only: a boy and girl kiss, two girls share a kiss, and a couple make out in a school hallway. Two girls float in a hot spring in their underwear. Some frank talk about attraction, but nothing sexual is shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateTeens drink at a house party, where Ellie plays a drinking version of a board game, gets drunk and vomits, and Paul looks after her. The next morning she takes two pain-relief pills for the hangover. No drug use or smoking.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing frightening. The sad notes are Ellie's loneliness, classmates jeering at her, and her father's lingering grief for her mother, who died before the story begins. A public scene in a church is awkward rather than upsetting.
Sensitive topics
- Bullying
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Ask why Ellie hides her feelings behind someone else's words, and what the film suggests about honesty and the different ways people love each other.
