The Evil Dead: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated NC-17 for substantial graphic horror violence and gore.

A cult splatter classic for adults: low-budget, sometimes darkly funny, and relentlessly gory. Five college friends at a remote cabin unleash demons that possess them one by one, and the survivors must hack apart people they love. Dismemberment, stabbings with pencils and a decapitation fill the second half. Parents should also know about one notorious scene in which possessed vines bind a young woman, tear her clothes and sexually assault her. The film now carries an NC-17 for its graphic gore, so we suggest 18.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent graphic gore: a woman is dismembered with an axe, pencils and a dagger are driven into bodies, eyes are gouged, a head is cut off with a shovel, and corpses melt. Sexual violence: possessed vines rape a woman, and a headless corpse writhes on top of the hero.

Language

Mild

Very little: hell and bastards, plus a few exclamations. Most of the noise is screaming and demonic cackling rather than swearing.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Two young couples kiss and flirt, and one comes close to having sex. Brief partial nudity, mostly when the vines strip a woman during the assault described under violence.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

The friends swig from a jar while driving, drink wine at dinner and pass around what appears to be a joint. Brief, but drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained, shrieking terror: possessed friends with white eyes cackle and taunt, the woods themselves attack, the cellar hides horrors, and a racing camera stands in for an unseen evil. Disturbing images throughout.

Worth talking about

Critics have long singled out the vine attack as a sexual assault treated like just another shock effect. Why might that scene land differently with audiences today than in 1981?
