The Conjuring 2: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for terror and horror violence.

A long, very scary haunted-house sequel for teens who love horror and handle scares well. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to London to help a single mother whose 11-year-old daughter seems possessed. Like the first film, it earned its R for fear rather than gore, sex or language: swearing is mostly mild British slang and there is no sexual content. Expect constant jump scares, a demonic nun, bloody visions of a family shot in their beds, and a climax in which a demon tries to make the possessed girl jump from a window. We suggest 15 for the intensity.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A vision shows a man shooting his sleeping family, with blood on pajamas and a headboard, and another shows a man impaled. A girl is thrown into walls and pinned to ceilings, people are bitten, and a spirit makes a woman choke herself.

Language

Mild

Mild: "bloody" about six times, "wanker" once, a couple of uses each of "a--" and "hell," a "damn," some misuse of God's name, and classmates calling two girls "lesbos."

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sexual content or nudity. Ed and Lorraine trade a flirty quip, a girl talks about letting a boy kiss her, and an absent father's affair is mentioned.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

An 11-year-old smokes a cigarette with a friend and gets caught; her mother scolds her while smoking herself, and a teacher takes a drag. Beer sits on a pub table.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Near-constant dread and jump scares: a demonic figure in a nun's habit, a possessed child speaking in an old man's growl, and furniture hurled across rooms. In the climax a demon drives the possessed girl to an open window to make her jump.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Billy is mocked for his stutter, and classmates taunt Janet and her friend. Talk about how isolation makes hard times harder, and how to stand up for a classmate.
