The Beatles: Get Back: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.

An absorbing, very long fly-on-the-wall series for music-loving teens and parents to watch together. Across three episodes totaling nearly eight hours, Peter Jackson's restored footage follows the Beatles writing and rehearsing in January 1969, through tense arguments, jokes, George Harrison's brief walkout and the famous rooftop concert. The main issue is language: one review counted more than 25 f-words, plus crude sexual jokes. Cigarettes are lit almost constantly, and beer and wine are around. There is no real violence or nudity. We suggest 13 for the swearing; the slow pace will test many younger viewers anyway.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Nothing beyond brief vintage clips of unruly crowds at earlier Beatles appearances, fans burning records, and a mention of a Klan member threatening a show. Police arrive during the rooftop concert, but nothing turns physical.

Language

Strong

More than 25 f-words by one count, plus s-words, 'hell' and God's name in vain. Band members also trade crude sexual jokes, including references to a 'hard-on' and a 'wet dream.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex or nudity. Wives and girlfriends visit the studio and partners share casual kisses. A few song lyrics and studio jokes are sexually suggestive.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Cigarettes and cigars are lit almost constantly, and beer and wine are drunk in the studio without anyone getting drunk. The band talks about drugs a few times, and John Lennon often looks distant, but no drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing frightening. The tension is personal: arguments, a band member quitting for a few days, and uncertainty about the group's future.

Worth talking about

The Beatles were close to breaking up yet still wrote some of their best songs together. How do creative partners work through frustration and disagreement?
