The Apothecary Diaries: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.

A clever palace mystery anime for teens, following a sharp-tongued young apothecary who solves poisonings and deaths in an imperial court modeled on old China. On-screen violence is limited, but the themes are mature: constant talk of courtesans, concubines and the sale of women, implied sex, brief partial nudity, sexual harassment, an infant's death, apparent suicides, a suicide attempt and a drowned body. Season 2's backstory reveals that the late emperor preyed on young girls, and the season ends with a bloodier armed rebellion. The heroine eagerly tests poisons on herself, and teens and adults drink. A third season began in October 2026. Best for 14 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Mostly poisonings and their aftermath, slaps and knife threats, plus a girl struck with a club and left bloodied. Season 2 adds an assassination attempt with a gun and a fortress assault with stabbings, shootings and several deaths.

Language

Mild

Mild: occasional 'damn' and name-calling like 'idiot' and 'creep,' plus cruel remarks when older attendants bully a young girl.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Frequent innuendo about courtesans, concubines and brothels, an aphrodisiac mishap, implied sex, brief partial breast nudity and covered bedroom nudity. A man tries to make a woman lick honey off his fingers against her will. Season 2 reveals the late emperor preyed on young girls.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

The heroine is fascinated by drugs and poisons, doses herself to test them and bandages an arm scarred by her experiments. Adults and underage characters drink, sometimes to excess, and a man reportedly drank himself to death. Tobacco, an aphrodisiac and a hallucinogen drive plots.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Ghostly scares, a close-up of a drowned woman's body, coffins holding the dead, and an infant's death that leaves a mother grieving. A courtesan is revealed to have cut the tip off her baby's finger. Kidnappings, illness and, in season 2, poisoned children add tension.

Worth talking about

Maomao is brilliant but treats her own body as a test subject, and the women around her have few choices about their lives. How do the rules of her world limit them, and how do they push back?
