Other Mommy: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for some bloody violence, and language.
A gory supernatural horror film built around a child in danger, made for older teens and adults. A shape-shifting entity that looks like a 7-year-old's mother torments the girl and her family. Expect bloody, body-horror deaths, including a slow-motion exploding head and a torn-out throat, constant peril and violence aimed at a young girl, jump scares, and about 20 f-words, many said around the child. Sexual content is limited to kisses and talk of infidelity. A child is allowed to taste a cocktail. The intensity of the gore and the sustained terror around a young child put it at 16 and up.
What's in it
Violence
StrongSeveral characters die bloodily: a head bursts in slow motion, a throat is torn out, a body snaps backward, and skin is peeled away. A young girl is slammed down repeatedly; there are stabbings, gunfire and a vision of a child's opened body.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted about 20 spoken f-words, much of it shouted near the young girl, along with s-words, hell, ass, and several uses of God's and Jesus' names as exclamations.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex or nudity. A married couple shares a few quick kisses, infidelity drives the backstory without being shown, a character learns she was born from an affair, and party dresses show cleavage.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink wine and sparkling wine at a party. A father has his 7-year-old carry a cocktail to her mother and lets her sip it, and she likes the taste. One adult admits to being a little high.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained terror centered on a child: a shape-shifter with extra limbs and unnatural movements, a red-eyed demon, a girl dragged into a ball pit and teleported into the ocean, frequent jump scares, and a child so scared she wets herself.
Worth talking about
Bela learns to tell when someone is lying to her and to refuse what feels wrong. Talk about how kids can trust their instincts and say no, even to someone who seems familiar.
