One of Them Days: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language throughout, sexual material and brief drug use.
A loud, warm buddy comedy for older teens about two broke best friends and roommates in Los Angeles racing to scrape together their rent in a single day before they're evicted. The friendship is sweet and the film touches on gentrification and money stress, but the swearing is nonstop: one count found about 90 f-words, nearly 50 s-words and about 20 uses of the n-word. Expect crude sex talk, a pot-smoking scene played for laughs, slapstick injuries and a gang member shooting at people. Since language drives the R, we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateMostly slapstick: spraying blood from a botched blood donation, an electrocution, people hit by a car, brawls. A gang member shoots at the leads, a man is dropped from a parking garage as the film cuts away, and two unseen characters are reported shot dead.
Language
StrongConstant strong language; one count found about 90 f-words, nearly 50 s-words and around 20 uses of the n-word between Black characters, plus crude anatomy slang and many uses of bitch, ass and damn.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sex scenes, but a woman twerks with her rear partly bare, nipples show through a thin shirt, and a man's underwear bulge is a running gag. Sex is implied off screen, a friend describes a hookup in detail, and another goes back to stripping.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongSeveral characters smoke marijuana together in a comic scene, people drink wine and a Hot Cheeto martini, and a waitress deals with drunk and high customers. Talk of being high is casual.
Scary or intense scenes
MildA few tense moments: armed gang members threaten and shoot at the friends, a building catches fire with characters in danger, and a man is dangled over the edge of a garage and dropped. The tone stays comic.
Worth talking about
Dreux and Alyssa face rising rent and a landlord who favors a white tenant. Talk about how money stress and gentrification shape the choices people make.
