Juno: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material, sexual content and language.

A sharp, witty comedy-drama about a 16-year-old who gets pregnant and decides on adoption, best shared with teens who are ready to talk about sex and its consequences. The pregnancy follows one brief encounter seen in flashback without nudity, and the dialogue is full of frank sexual slang. Language includes one f-word and about a dozen s-words. Juno goes to an abortion clinic before changing her mind, and the adoptive couple turn out to have serious troubles of their own. There is no violence and no drug use beyond jokes. A good fit from about 13.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

None in the story itself. Juno jokingly fashions a noose from licorice rope, and she and Mark briefly watch a campy, gory clip from an old horror movie in which a woman is impaled.

Language

Moderate

One f-word and about a dozen s-words by one count, plus "asshole," "bastard," "dick," a made-up twist on the f-word, a handful of misuses of God's name, and one middle finger.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Juno's first time with her friend is shown briefly in flashback: he is shirtless, her underwear drops to the floor, and she keeps her shirt on. Frequent sexual slang, a condom demonstration on a banana, and a masturbation reference.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

No use shown. Juno jokes about drinking lots of booze and offers to sell a classmate her ADHD medication, and an adult drinks wine to calm her nerves.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Nothing frightening, but some heavy moments: an ultrasound, a painful labor and delivery, a classmate protesting outside an abortion clinic, and the adoptive parents' split, which leaves Juno crying alone in her car.

Worth talking about

Juno makes a huge decision at 16 with her family behind her. If you ever faced something that big, who would you want to talk to first?
