It Follows: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for disturbing violent and sexual content including graphic nudity, and language.

A clever, deeply creepy indie horror film that is strictly for older teens because sex drives the whole story. A college-age woman learns that a shape-shifting entity will stalk her after a sexual encounter and that she can pass it on only by sleeping with someone else. Expect several sex scenes, full-frontal nudity from the entity's forms, a killing that is also a sexual assault, a young woman drugged and tied up, gunshots and blood, frequent f-words, and teen drinking and pot smoking. The dread is quiet and constant rather than gory.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

The entity kills a young man while having sex with him in the form of his mother, a sexual assault shown briefly. A mangled corpse, bloody gunshots to the head, a car crash, and a woman drugged with chloroform and bound to a wheelchair.

Language

Strong

Strong profanity throughout: one detailed guide counted six to eight f-words and as many s-words, another about 18 crude words in all, plus 'bulls--t' and misuse of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Sex is central: the lead has several sex scenes with movement and moaning, the entity appears fully nude from the front as both a man and a woman, and teens look at porn magazines and joke about sex.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Teens and young adults drink beer and liquor and smoke cigarettes. One guide reports two teens smoking pot, and the lead handles a bottle of pills; guides disagree on whether she takes one. Nothing is glamorized.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Slow, relentless dread as the entity walks steadily toward its victims in unsettling disguises, including half-dressed and elderly figures. Jump scares, a violent attack at a pool, and an ambiguous ending.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault

Worth talking about

The curse spreads through sex, and one character passes it on without warning his partner. Talk about consent, honesty with partners, and what the film might be saying about risk and trust.
