Free Guy: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for strong fantasy violence throughout, language and crude/suggestive references.
A bright, funny action comedy for teens and parents, though the video-game mayhem never stops and the jokes get crude. A background character in a shoot-'em-up online game becomes self-aware and decides to be the hero. Players shoot, crash and blow each other up constantly, mostly without blood, since characters respawn. There is one f-word, a second one cut off mid-word, about 15 s-words, a middle finger, and a steady run of jokes about virginity and sexual body parts. There is no nudity or drug use. Age 13 reflects the language and innuendo more than the cartoonish violence.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateConstant game violence: shootings, explosions, car chases, tanks crushing cars, people set on fire and helicopters crashing. Characters die and respawn. Blood is minimal, though the hero gets a bloody broken nose and a robber is left with a cartoonish hole in his chest.
Language
ModerateOne f-word, a second cut off mid-word by a young girl, about 15 s-words, plus ass, asshole, damn, hell and bitch, nearly 20 misuses of God's name, and a couple of middle-finger gestures.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent crude jokes about virginity, sexual body parts and sex acts. An avatar grinds against the hero in a lewd dance, and some characters wear revealing outfits. The hero and heroine kiss several times. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildGame characters hang out in a seedy saloon, and there is one passing joke about recreational drugs. No drinking or drug use is shown in any detail.
Scary or intense scenes
MildPeril is played for laughs and thrills; the tensest stretch has the game world being wiped out around the hero. No horror imagery or jump scares.
Worth talking about
Talk about whether how someone acts in a game says anything about them, and why Guy chooses kindness in a world that rewards violence.
