Edward Scissorhands: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13.

A dark, tender fairy tale best suited to tweens and teens who can handle gothic imagery and a sad ending. Edward, a gentle artificial man with scissors for hands, is welcomed into a pastel suburb and then turned on by it. The final act brings a beating, a stabbing and a fatal fall, and a mob hunts Edward. A neighbor tries to seduce him in her bra, then falsely accuses him of sexually assaulting her. Teens drink, one drives drunk, and Edward gets drunk and sick. Language is limited but includes "retarded" and "cripple" as insults. Its plea for kindness to outsiders gives families plenty to discuss.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Edward's blades cause small accidental cuts with some blood. In the climax, Kim's boyfriend beats Edward with a poker and fires a gun; Edward stabs him, and he falls from a window and lies dead below.

Language

Moderate

Around ten instances of profanity, including "s--t," "dick," "damn," "hell" and God's name as an exclamation. Edward is called a "freak," and the insults "retarded" and "cripple" are used.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A married neighbor in tight outfits straddles Edward and strips to her bra trying to seduce him, then falsely accuses him of sexually assaulting her. Women gossip about him suggestively, and a teen jokes about a van with a mattress.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Edward drinks alcohol for the first time, gets drunk and is sick. Teens drink beer, one drives recklessly after drinking, and adults drink at home and smoke cigarettes.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The dark, decaying mansion and Edward's scarred face and blades may scare young kids. A flashback shows his elderly inventor, a father figure, collapsing and dying before him, and an angry mob hunts Edward at the end.

Sensitive topics

  • Bullying
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The neighbors adore Edward while he is useful and turn on him once rumors spread. Talk about how quickly a group can change its mind about someone who is different, and what Kim does differently.
