Last Christmas: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for language and sexual content.
A sweet, sad London romantic comedy set to George Michael songs that suits teens more than kids. Kate, a struggling singer who works in a year-round Christmas shop, drinks too much and drifts through casual hookups after a serious illness, until a kind stranger nudges her toward helping others. Expect frequent s-words and British crude slang (possibly one f-word), implied one-night stands, heavy drinking, a scene of anti-immigrant abuse on a bus, and a late twist involving a death that many viewers find upsetting. Sex is talked about more than shown. Age 13 reflects the sexual content and drinking.
What's in it
Violence
MildVery little. A fatal traffic accident is referred to but not shown, patients are rushed into a hospital, surgeons make a chest incision during a transplant, and a pet fish is accidentally electrocuted.
Language
ModerateFrequent: about ten s-words, British slang such as bollocks, wanker, shag and sodding, and God's and Jesus' names as exclamations. There may be one f-word: a single detailed guide counts one, but the BBFC and four other guides list none.
Sex and nudity
ModerateKate's repeated casual hookups are discussed rather than shown, though she wakes apparently naked under a blanket in a stranger's bed. Also a few kisses, crude sexual talk, jokes about male anatomy and a bawdy song.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateKate drinks heavily, gets drunk at least twice, keeps drinking against medical advice after a transplant, and does shots with her mother. The film treats her drinking as a problem rather than fun.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateNot scary, but emotionally heavy: Kate's illness and surgery, her depression, and a late reveal about a character's death that brings real grief. A man's threats toward an immigrant couple on a bus are tense.

Worth talking about
Kate starts to feel better once she volunteers at a shelter. Talk about why doing something for others can lift your own mood, and when it is time to ask for help instead.
