Clayface: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence, gore, language, some nudity and brief drug use.

A brutal, gory body-horror revenge film rather than a superhero adventure, suited only to older teens and adults. An actor whose face is slashed by a mobster takes an experimental treatment that turns his body into shapeshifting clay, then uses it to kill the people who betrayed him. Expect close-up surgery and flesh-warping effects, murders by suffocation, stabbing and bludgeoning, a man cutting his own eyelids, female full-frontal nudity after a night together, a drug passed mouth to mouth, and dozens of f-words. The graphic violence and nudity put it at 17; the UK rated it 18.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and frequent: a face sliced open with a knife, surgery peeling back skin and flesh, a throat torn out, an eye stabbed, genital wounds to two men, suffocations, shootings, and the hero cutting into his own face and eyelids.

Language

Strong

Constant strong profanity: f-word counts range from about 31 (Movieguide) to close to 60 (Plugged In), plus several s-words, "prick," "ass," "damn," "hell" and misuses of Jesus' name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

A couple kisses heavily at a club and wakes up in bed together; the woman is seen topless, from behind, and in full-frontal nudity. A nipple slips out of a dress, plus an erotic dream and crude Viagra jokes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

A woman passes a party-drug pill into a man's mouth while kissing him, nightclub patrons are visibly drunk and taking pills, and adults drink wine at dinner and on flights.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained body horror: flesh warping and melting, a man reshaped into a lumpy monster, invasive procedures with scalpels and needles, a cockroach crawling across a face, a story about an abused child who died, and a bleak tone with no comic relief.

Sensitive topics

  • Self-harm

Worth talking about

How the film ties looks and fame to self-worth, and whether Matt's revenge gives him back anything he actually lost.
