Carol: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language.

A slow, beautifully made adult romance about two women falling in love in 1950s New York, best for older teens and adults. A young shop clerk and an elegant, unhappily married mother begin a relationship that puts the mother's custody of her daughter at risk. Expect one tasteful but frank love scene with breast nudity, two f-words, near-constant period smoking and plenty of drinking, a drunk husband who gets physical in an argument, and a brief gun threat. Homophobia runs through the story, and the film clearly condemns it. Age 16 reflects the sex scene and the mature themes.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Brief and bloodless: a drunk husband grabs his wife during an argument and ends up shoved to the ground, and a woman points a gun at a private detective who spied on her, with no shot fired.

Language

Moderate

Two f-words, about ten damns (often paired with God's name), Jesus' name misused a few times, and an occasional hell and bitch.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

One love scene between the two leads, tastefully shot but frank, shows them undressing with repeated breast nudity and implies oral sex; it is not graphic. Elsewhere there are lingering looks, kissing and references to past affairs.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Characters smoke constantly, true to the period, and drink champagne, martinis, wine and whiskey; a husband is drunk and falls down, and partygoers are shown passed out.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Not scary, but tense: a detective secretly records the women, a custody fight threatens to separate a mother from her young daughter, and characters face cruelty for who they love.

Worth talking about

Carol must choose between hiding who she is and keeping custody of her daughter. Talk about how laws and attitudes toward gay people have changed since the 1950s, and what still has not.
