Animals: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language throughout, some violence and sexual references.

A tense, profane kidnapping thriller for older teens and adults. A Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife scramble to pay a ransom after a boy is snatched while trick-or-treating with their family, and the night spirals into violence and cover-ups. Expect constant f-words (Movieguide counted 64) plus the c-word, several people shot and killed with little blood, a child threatened with death, affairs, one brief sex scene without nudity, and crude sexual talk. Racial tension in the couple's marriage and campaign is part of the story. We suggest 16 and up for the language and violence.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Several people are shot and killed during a ransom exchange and its aftermath, with little blood but intense staging. A kidnapped boy is threatened with injury and death, there are fights and falls, and a fixer offers to kill someone.

Language

Strong

Constant strong profanity: Movieguide counted 64 f-words, four s-words and two vulgar terms for female anatomy, including the c-word. Other insults include bastard, bitch and asshole, with frequent uses of God's and Jesus' names.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Married adults have affairs, and one scene briefly shows a couple having sex without nudity. Other sex is implied, and dialogue includes crude references to masturbation and to getting railed.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Very little: Common Sense notes one man drinking alcohol and another smoking a cigarette, while Movieguide noted no drinking or smoking at all. No drug use is reported.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Suspense rather than horror: parents and children panic through a night of terror as a boy is held for ransom and threatened with death, with sudden gunfire at the exchange. The child-in-danger premise may upset younger viewers.

Worth talking about

The story turns on the gap between what really happened and the version told to the public. Talk about how politicians and the media shape stories, and what it costs to lie for success.
