A Good Girl's Guide to Murder: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A gripping British teen mystery best for mid-teens and up with a parent nearby. A determined student reopens the case of a murdered classmate, and the clues lead to drug dealing, a date-rape drug and rape; the assaults happen off screen but drive the plot, and series 2 centers on the rapist's trial. Expect a bloodied head wound, threats and stalking, the killing of the family dog, a teen's death first presented as suicide, and in series 2 a man shot dead in front of the heroine, who is left traumatized. Teens drink, partygoers use ketamine, and f-words are frequent. Sex stays mostly off screen.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Sexual violence: two girls are drugged with Rohypnol and raped, discussed rather than shown, an adult's sex with a 15-year-old comes out, and Pip barely escapes a pushy partygoer. Also a fatal head wound, the dog's killing, and a man shot repeatedly in front of Pip.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong swearing in both series: f-words and s-words throughout, with three f-words in the first episode by one count, plus prick, cock, arse and bitch.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Kissing and making out, teens cuddling in bed, talk of nude photos and hooking up, condoms found while snooping in a bedroom, and a couple seen and heard having sex in a dark corner of a rave. No nudity is shown.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Underage drinking and shots, a teen drug dealer, ketamine use visible at a party, and Rohypnol at the center of the plot. In series 2 a teen gets drunk and vomits. A glass of cigarette butts appears.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Steady suspense rather than horror: threats, stalking, a warning left in Pip's bed, Pip drugged, the loss of her dog, and a woman found held captive. In series 2 a shooting and a fire leave Pip with vivid flashbacks and a panic attack.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Suicide
  • Animal death
  • Death of a child

Worth talking about

The whole town decided Sal was guilty before any real evidence came out. Why do people rush to judgment, and what did it cost his family?
