A Series of Unfortunate Events: parents' guide
Best for ages 9 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A darkly funny gothic adventure for families with tweens who like clever, gloomy stories. Three orphans lose their parents in a house fire and are passed between guardians while the villainous Count Olaf schemes to steal their fortune. Several adults are killed over three seasons, mostly offscreen or with a wry, theatrical touch, and one guardian fakes her own suicide with a note. Olaf's mistreatment of the children, including a slap, forced chores and a plan to marry 14-year-old Violet, is the heaviest material. Language and romance are minimal. The relentless bleakness and grief suit kids about 9 and up who can handle sad endings.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateOlaf slaps Klaus hard enough to leave a red mark. Across three seasons several adults are killed, by poison, leeches, a furnace, lions and a harpoon, but the deaths are mostly offscreen or theatrical, with little or no blood.
Language
MildVery clean. Mostly name-calling such as 'brat,' with a rare questionable word from Olaf and God's name misused in one of his songs.
Sex and nudity
MildLittle romance: a few adult kisses, including one between Olaf and another adult near the end, and some light innuendo. Olaf's plan to wed 14-year-old Violet for her fortune is unsettling but played as villainy, and nothing sexual is shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneReviewers flag no drinking, smoking or drug use worth noting.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateGloomy and eerie throughout, with the children in constant danger: a baby dangled in a cage from a tower, a leech attack, fires and hypnotism. One guardian fakes her own suicide with a note. Grief over the parents and each lost guardian runs throughout.

Worth talking about
The adults who should protect the Baudelaires keep refusing to listen to them. Talk about which grown-ups your child can turn to when something feels wrong, and what to do if the first one doesn't help.
