A Nightmare on Elm Street: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R.
A landmark slasher for older teens who want a classic scare and can handle gore. Teenagers on one suburban street are hunted in their dreams by Freddy Krueger, a burned child killer, so falling asleep becomes deadly. The deaths are bloody and surreal: a girl is dragged across her ceiling as she is slashed, and a bed erupts in a geyser of blood. Expect implied teen sex with moaning heard offscreen, a brief shadowy glimpse of nudity, f-words, and a mother who drinks heavily. A parent is killed late in the film. The effects look dated now, but the gore keeps it at 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongStrong, bloody and dreamlike: a teen is slashed while flung across her ceiling, a bed spews a torrent of blood, a boy is hanged with a bedsheet and police call it suicide, a face peels to the skull, and the killer burns.
Language
ModerateStrong words come in a few scenes rather than constantly (the BBFC calls them infrequent): f-words, s-words, ass, a--hole, bastard and dickhead, plus damn, hell and God's name as exclamations.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo teens, one described as 15, go to bed together while loud moaning is heard from the next room, and they are implied to be naked under the sheets. Brief, shadowy, non-sexual nudity and a few crude jokes.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateThe heroine's mother is a heavy drinker, often seen clutching a bottle and portrayed as alcoholic. The heroine gulps coffee and caffeine to stay awake, and a character smokes cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained dread built on the fear of sleep: a clawed killer stalks teens through their nightmares, a gloved hand rises from a bathtub, a phone sprouts a tongue, and a creepy jump-rope rhyme recurs. The final scene is a shock.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Suicide
- Addiction
Worth talking about
The parents of Elm Street took the law into their own hands and then hid it from their children. What does the film say about the secrets adults keep, and about kids left to face danger alone?
