A Boy Called Christmas: parents' guide
Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for peril, action and thematic elements.
A warm, handsome fantasy adventure about the boy who becomes Father Christmas, fine for most kids 8 and up but heavier on loss than many holiday films. Young Nikolas, whose mother was killed by a bear, sets out across the frozen north with his pet mouse to find his missing father and a hidden elf city. Expect chases by a bear and archers, a frightening troll, a cruel aunt who eats his food and makes him sleep outdoors in the cold, and the on-screen death of a parent that leaves Nikolas sobbing. There is no swearing, romance or drinking, and the story handles grief with real tenderness.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFantasy peril with real deaths: a man falls to his death from a cliff, archers shoot at the heroes, an arrow is pulled from a reindeer's leg, a pixie's magic leaf is said to make heads explode, and a troll meets an off-screen end.
Language
NoneNo profanity. A made-up word stands in for a curse, and there is a little name-calling, but nothing stronger.
Sex and nudity
NoneNone. The closest it gets is a talking mouse flirting with a gingerbread figure and hoping to marry an elf cheesemaker.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNone. No one drinks, smokes or uses drugs at any point in the story, adult or child.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA roaring bear, an enraged reindeer and a huge troll who nearly eats Nikolas create real peril, and the film dwells on grief: a mother's death is recounted, and a father dies on screen as his son cries out.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Child abuse
Worth talking about
The film suggests grief is the price of loving someone. It can open a gentle talk about missing people who have died and what keeps their memory close.
