Widows (2018): parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for violence, language throughout, and some sexual content/nudity.

A gripping, grown-up heist thriller for older teens and adults that mixes a crime plot with hard looks at grief, race and Chicago politics. Four women whose criminal husbands died in a botched job team up for a robbery to pay off a dangerous debt. Violence is frequent and bloody, with fatal shootings, a fiery explosion and an enforcer who stabs and beats people to death. Swearing is constant, one sex scene shows bare breasts and buttocks, and the story touches on domestic abuse, a son killed by police, and a young widow pushed into paid escort work. The graphic content points to 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Bloody, mostly fatal shootings, some point-blank; a van explodes with men inside; one man is stabbed repeatedly and another beaten to death. A wife bears bruises from her abusive husband, women trade slaps, a woman is groped, and a dog is hoisted by its neck.

Language

Strong

Constant: more than 60 f-words and about 25 s-words by one count, two c-words, the n-word and other slurs, and 'gay' used as an insult.

Sex and nudity

Strong

One fairly explicit sex scene shows bare breasts and buttocks, and a married couple kisses and fondles in bed. Explicit photos with nudity are used for blackmail, and a young widow becomes a paid companion after her mother urges it.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink from a flask, at bars and with champagne at a spa, without getting drunk. One character smokes, and a bag of marijuana is briefly implied. No drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Tense throughout, with a violent opening, a menacing enforcer who toys with victims before hurting them, and raw scenes of grief. A mother relives the night her son, a young man, was shot by police during a traffic stop.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Racism
  • Domestic abuse

Worth talking about

Each widow has to take control after the men in her life leave her in danger. How does the film link personal grief to bigger problems like police violence and political corruption?
