The Twilight Zone: parents' guide
Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A classic black-and-white anthology that suits curious tweens who like eerie stories with a twist. Each episode is a standalone tale, and the chills come from ideas and atmosphere rather than gore. There is no profanity or sexual content, and the violence is bloodless early-TV staging. Expect lots of smoking, some drinking and a few dark turns: a despairing drunk steps in front of a truck, a 5-year-old is lured toward death by his late grandmother's voice, and some episodes take on racism and the Holocaust. Stories like the threatening doll and the gremlin on the airplane wing can cause nightmares, so we suggest 10.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateDeaths, gunfire and fistfights turn up across the 156 episodes, but nothing is bloody or lingering, and most of it is tame by modern standards. One episode recounts concentration-camp torture and killings and puts the former commandant through ghostly punishments.
Language
NoneNo profanity to speak of; the dialogue stays within early-1960s network standards, with nothing stronger than an occasional insult.
Sex and nudity
NoneRomances are chaste, with nothing beyond an occasional kiss. No nudity or sexual talk.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSmoking is everywhere, including by host Rod Serling on camera, and adults drink regularly. A few stories center on heavy drinkers, such as a jobless trumpet player who goes on a binge after selling his horn.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe show runs on unease: a talking doll that threatens a father, a creature on an airplane wing, a small boy with terrifying powers, and twist endings that leave characters trapped or doomed. Young reviewers say some episodes gave them nightmares.

Worth talking about
Many episodes are fables about fear, prejudice and greed, like neighbors turning on each other during a blackout. Ask what the twist ending reveals about the people involved and whether the lesson still holds today.
