The Night Of: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A grim, slow-burning legal drama for older teens and adults. A Pakistani American college student is charged with murder after a night of drinking, drugs and sex with a young woman he just met. Much of the story unfolds at Rikers Island jail, where his bed is set on fire, he is slashed and he is pulled into the drug trade, and in a courtroom and city full of suspicion toward Muslims. Expect a bloody stabbing scene, prison violence, a young inmate's rape and suicide, drug use and constant swearing. It is gripping but bleak, so we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

The victim's stabbed body and bloody crime scene are shown repeatedly. In jail, Naz's bed is set on fire, his arm is slashed, he badly beats another inmate, and a prisoner is killed with a razor. A young inmate's rape is part of the story.

Language

Strong

Constant strong profanity in police stations, jail and court, including frequent f-words and s-words, plus bigoted insults aimed at Naz and his Muslim family.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Naz and the woman have sex after a night of partying; it is brief and not graphic. Crude sexual talk fills the jail scenes, a lawyer kisses her client, and prison rape is discussed.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Naz and the woman drink and take drugs before the murder. In jail he smuggles cocaine for a powerful inmate and starts using himself, a habit that continues after the trial. Hard liquor and cigarettes throughout.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

A heavy, constant dread. Rikers is shown as brutal and threatening for a scared young man, the crime scene and forensic evidence are grisly, and a young inmate takes his own life after being raped.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Suicide
  • Addiction
  • Racism

Worth talking about

Naz changes a great deal while he waits for trial. How does the justice system shape people before they are convicted, and how does prejudice affect the way others see him?
