The Mandalorian: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-14.

A Star Wars space western that most families can share with kids around 10, since the violence is constant but nearly bloodless. A lone bounty hunter protects a small, very cute alien child, and nearly every episode has blaster shootouts, explosions and monster attacks, with big body counts of faceless troopers and a few familiar characters killed. Language stays mild and romance is almost absent. Creatures that swallow or carry off people, the child often in danger, and flashbacks of the hero orphaned in a raid can upset sensitive kids. Disney+ lists it TV-14, though it plays closer to a PG adventure.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Blaster battles, knife fights and explosions in nearly every episode, with many deaths but little blood. People are stabbed, burned, disintegrated, cut in two by a door or eaten by creatures, a kindly ally is shot dead, and season 3 adds a gory sea-monster kill.

Language

Mild

Mild and infrequent: hell, damn, bastard and wiseass, plus made-up Star Wars curses like "dank farrik." Plugged In heard nothing stronger in the episodes it reviewed.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Almost nothing: some passing innuendo, a near-romance in one episode that goes nowhere, and an alien couple caressing affectionately in season 3. No nudity or sex.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Bar scenes with glowing blue drinks treated as alcohol, pirates downing something intoxicating, and one offhand suggestion to buy spice, a fictional drug. No one is shown drunk or using drugs.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Big creatures attack without warning: a giant dragon swallows people whole, a flying beast carries off a boy, and a monster drains its prey. Flashbacks show the hero as a child hidden by his parents during a droid raid that kills them.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Din lives by a strict code he was raised with, then starts questioning parts of it. Which rules are worth keeping when they clash with caring for someone?
