The Long Walk: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence, grisly images, suicide, pervasive language, and sexual references.
A brutal, bleak dystopian thriller for mature viewers only. Fifty teenage boys must keep walking, and anyone who falls below pace too often is shot dead by soldiers, so nearly every character dies, most from close-range shots to the head. Two characters take their own lives on screen, one by stabbing his own throat. Language is relentless, with well over 200 f-words, plus homophobic slurs and crude sexual jokes, and a flashback recalls a father's execution. The constant graphic killing of teenagers and the suicides are why we suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongTeen walkers are shot at close range, mostly in the head, with realistic blood and gore, and left on the road. One has his legs crushed by a military vehicle, one dies of internal bleeding, and fights end in gunfire.
Language
StrongPervasive: Plugged In counted about 280 f-words and Movieguide at least 234, plus 50 or more s-words, frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names, homophobic slurs, and obscene gestures.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sex scenes. Walkers trade crude sexual jokes, including about oral sex, debate wishing for naked women, and taunt each other with sexual insults. A walker with diarrhea relieves himself on the road, with brief rear exposure.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildMinimal: Common Sense notes some cigarette smoking, though other reviewers saw none, and there is talk of a relative who drank heavily. No drug use or drunkenness is shown.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongUnrelenting dread, since any walker can be executed at any moment. Boys collapse, have seizures, relieve themselves in the street and break down mentally. Two suicides are shown, and the ending is grim.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a child
- Suicide
- Death of a parent

Worth talking about
Crowds cheer as teenagers are killed for entertainment and national pride. Why might a society accept cruelty like this, and how do the walkers hold on to kindness?
