The Fall of the House of Usher: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A lurid, gory horror drama for adults and mature older teens. Spinning Edgar Allan Poe stories into the saga of a drug company built on an addictive painkiller, it kills off the founder's grown children one by one in grisly ways. Expect full-frontal nudity at an orgy, several sex scenes, dozens of f-words per episode, cocaine and pill use, bloody experiments on chimpanzees, a cat stabbed to death, a suicide in front of a parent and the death of a teenager. It is the most graphic of Mike Flanagan's horror series, so we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Gruesome deaths in nearly every episode: partygoers burned to death by acid spray, a woman mauled by a chimpanzee, a man cut in half, a fatal fall, and a woman buried alive who strangles someone. A cat is stabbed to death in a blood-soaked apartment.

Language

Strong

Relentless profanity: Plugged In counted more than 25 f-words in the first episode, nearly 65 in the second and at least 30 in the third, along with s-words, the c-word and graphic sexual talk.

Sex and nudity

Strong

An orgy episode shows full-frontal male and female nudity and topless dancers, with sex on surveillance video. Other episodes include explicit encounters, role-play with a hired actress, masturbation and plenty of crude sexual talk.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

The family fortune comes from an opioid blamed for tens of thousands of deaths. Characters snort cocaine, take pills, ecstasy and edibles, and drink heavily. Addiction is a running theme, a drug-fueled hallucination leads to a death, and an overdose is a plot point.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

A ghostly woman stalks the family, a dying patriarch hallucinates corpses and undead children, and every episode builds to a grisly comeuppance. A man torments his paralyzed wife, and animal-testing scenes show a chimp's beating heart in its open chest.

Worth talking about

The show ties the family's fate to an opioid crisis they profited from. Talk about corporate responsibility, the real opioid epidemic, and whether wealth can shield people from consequences.
