The Expanse: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-14.

A smart, dense space thriller best saved for older teens who like politics and hard science fiction. Across six seasons, Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt slide toward war while an alien substance spreads through the solar system. The violence turns gory at times, with body horror, torture and sudden deaths, and a few sex scenes show bare backsides. Language gets stronger once the show moves to Prime Video for seasons 4 to 6, which use the f-word. Suicides, a child's death and children used in experiments push it to about 15, a year above Common Sense Media's 14.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent gunfights, space battles and sudden killings, with blood drifting in zero gravity. Gorier moments include a close look at a severed arm, bodies warped by an alien infection, torture by officials and an asteroid attack on Earth in season 5.

Language

Strong

Shit, ass and hell are common, along with invented Belter slang. Common Sense Media lists no f-words for the Syfy seasons (1 to 3), but the Prime Video seasons (4 to 6) use them, and Plugged In heard several in one season 5 episode.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A handful of sex scenes with moaning and thrusting, one in zero gravity, and bare male and female backsides, including men in a communal shower. A red-light district with women posing in lingerie, prostitution references and crude slang also appear.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Characters drink beer and cocktails in bars, and some drink to excess. Black-market growth hormones and enhancement drugs are traded, and crews take drugs to survive high-speed burns. Drug use is never a central storyline.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

An alien infection turns people into grotesque, glowing corpses, and one arc plays like a horror film. Children are abducted for experiments and an infected child dies. Two characters kill themselves, one attempts it, and a woman's controlling ex holds her captive.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Death of a child
  • Domestic abuse

Worth talking about

Belters face open prejudice from Earth and Mars throughout the series. Ask how the show uses that divide to explore who gets treated as fully human, and whether violence for a cause is ever justified.
