The Crown: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A lavish historical drama about Queen Elizabeth II's reign that suits teens interested in history, with some mature material. Most episodes are talky and restrained, but there are affairs, a long sex scene without explicit nudity, occasional bare breasts and buttocks, and a few strong words including a c-word. Later seasons show Princess Diana's bulimia and her talk of suicide attempts, Princess Margaret's pill overdose, the Aberfan disaster that killed schoolchildren, a graphic massacre of the Russian royal family, and Diana's fatal crash offscreen. The eating disorder and suicide content suit about 15 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Mostly restrained: war footage, an IRA bomb that kills a man and his grandson, bloody surgery, and hunts with wounded animals. A drawn-out season 5 flashback graphically shows the Romanov family, children included, shot and bayoneted. Diana's crash happens offscreen.

Language

Moderate

Mostly mild British words like 'bloody' and misused religious names. Stronger words are rare: a c-word in a crude joke in the first episode, an occasional s-word, and the odd f-word.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Affairs and romances drive many plots. One season 2 episode has a lengthy sex scene without explicit nudity, and there are brief bare breasts and buttocks, some in a tribal setting, plus suggestive photo shoots and sexual innuendo.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Cigarettes and cigars are constant, and a king's lung cancer is tied to smoking. Social drinking is routine with occasional drunkenness, a prime minister relies on prescription pills, and one man uses cocaine in season 5.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Emotionally heavy: a coal-tip collapse that buries a school full of children, Diana's bulimia and suicide attempts, Princess Margaret's overdose, a king's fatal illness, a young prince bullied at school, and Diana's death in season 6.

Worth talking about

Diana's bulimia and isolation are a big part of later seasons. Ask your teen how pressure and constant public scrutiny can affect mental health, and where someone could turn for help.
