Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: parents' guide
Best for ages 4 and up. Rated TV-G.
A gentle stop-motion classic that suits preschoolers watching with a parent, though its first half is harder on its hero than many adults remember. Rudolph is mocked, shut out of the reindeer games and hidden by his own father, and Santa is dismissive too, so the bullying comes from grown-ups as well as peers. The Abominable Snow Monster growls and threatens to eat Rudolph's family before he is tamed. Gender roles are dated, and one guide notes two Indigenous Arctic characters shown briefly in an igloo as old-fashioned 'Eskimo' stereotypes. Nothing is graphic, which is why we suggest 4, but sensitive little ones may need reassurance during the rejection scenes.
What's in it
Violence
MildCartoon action only. The snow monster holds Rudolph's family captive and knocks Rudolph out with a falling icicle; the heroes pull the monster's teeth and topple him off a cliff. Yukon Cornelius carries a gun, knife and whip but hurts no one.
Language
NoneNo profanity. The unkindness comes through name-calling instead: young reindeer jeer at Rudolph's glowing nose, and there are mild insults such as 'nitwit.'
Sex and nudity
NoneNothing beyond puppy love. Young bucks show off for the does, and Rudolph and Clarice share an innocent crush and a kiss.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo drinking, smoking or drug references of any kind appear anywhere in this short TV special.
Scary or intense scenes
MildThe Abominable Snow Monster roars, stalks the heroes and threatens to eat captives, and Yukon appears to plunge off a cliff before returning. Very young children may also be upset when Rudolph runs away from home.
Sensitive topics
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Ask why the adults, including Santa and Rudolph's dad, only welcome Rudolph once his nose turns out to be useful, and whether that is the right reason to accept someone who is different.
