Frosty the Snowman: parents' guide

3+our pick

Best for ages 3 and up. Rated TV-G.

A gentle half-hour cartoon classic that suits even preschoolers watching with a parent. A magician's discarded hat brings a snowman to life, and a little girl named Karen rides a freight train north with him so he can reach the North Pole before he melts. The villain is a bumbling magician who is more silly than menacing. The rough patches are brief: Karen gets dangerously cold, and Frosty melts in a locked greenhouse, leaving her in tears until Santa explains he will come back with the winter wind. There is no language, romance or substance content, and the ending is happy.

What's in it

Violence

None

No real violence. Professor Hinkle, a clumsy magician, chases the children and takes slapstick tumbles, and he puts out a campfire, but nobody is hurt or struck.

Language

None

No profanity or insults to speak of; the dialogue and the familiar songs are entirely clean and suitable for the youngest viewers.

Sex and nudity

None

No romance, kissing or anything suggestive; the story is about a friendship between a little girl and a snowman.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

Nothing. Frosty is drawn with the corncob pipe from the song, but he never smokes it, and no one drinks.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Brief peril and one sad scene: Karen grows dangerously cold on the trip north, and Frosty melts after Hinkle locks them in a greenhouse. Santa brings him back minutes later.

Worth talking about

Karen climbs onto a train without telling any grown-up. Talk about why kids should always check with a parent before going somewhere, even to help a friend.
