Outer Banks: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A fast, soapy treasure-hunt adventure aimed at teens but rated for mature viewers, best for older teens. A group of working-class friends on the North Carolina coast chase lost gold while dodging wealthy rivals, criminals and police across five seasons. Expect frequent shootings and on-screen killings, a father who brutally beats his son, constant underage drinking, pot smoking and some cocaine, steady swearing, and implied teen sex. Main characters' parents die, and a central character is murdered in season 4. Age 15 reflects the violence, substances and language rather than sexual content.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent and escalating: shootouts, stabbings, explosions, fights with crowbars, harpoons and knives, and a building set on fire with people inside. A father beats and strangles his teenage son. Several characters are killed on screen, some in drawn-out scenes, and the heroes kill too.

Language

Strong

Steady profanity: about a dozen s-words in an episode by one count, occasional f-words, plus "bitch," "bastard," "prick," "pussy," frequent misuse of God's name, slurs and middle fingers.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Teens kiss, make out and lounge in swimsuits. Sex is implied between teen couples, with one character undressing another to underwear, and a man in boxers implies he slept with his girlfriend. No explicit nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Teens drink at almost every chance; one drinks until vomiting and another drives drunk. Main characters smoke pot and cigarettes, teens snort cocaine at parties, and Rafe's cocaine habit and JJ's addict father are recurring storylines.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Frequent peril, including a hurricane, near-drownings, kidnappings and people held at gunpoint. Grief runs through later seasons as two parents and a main character die, and one teen lives with his father's abuse.

Sensitive topics

  • Child abuse
  • Death of a parent
  • Addiction

Worth talking about

Talk about the class divide between the working-class Pogues and the wealthy Kooks, and whether loyalty to friends justifies the lies and crimes the characters commit.
