Jingle All the Way: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for action violence, mild language and some thematic elements.

A slapstick holiday comedy that works for most kids around 8, especially with a parent ready to talk about its mixed message. A workaholic dad battles crowds, a rival shopper and a gang of fake Santas to get his son the year's must-have toy. Live-action brawls, a package bomb that blows up in a police officer's face and cops drawing guns are all played for laughs, with no real injuries. Expect innuendo from a neighbor chasing the hero's wife, mild swearing, drinking, a cigar, mock kung fu noises in fight gags and one racist joke about Chinese restaurants. The family-first lesson arrives late, after an hour of toy-chasing.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent comic brawling: shoppers trample people, a big fistfight breaks out with fake Santas, characters are tasered, maced and kicked in the groin, and police draw guns. A package bomb scorches a cop's face. No blood.

Language

Mild

Mild and occasional: 'damn,' 'hell,' 'ass,' 'screw' and 'butt,' plus insults like 'loser' and 'simpleton.' One line about sweating like a dog in a Chinese restaurant is a racist gag.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Innuendo runs through one subplot, as a neighbor keeps trying to seduce the hero's wife and fails. There is a crack about a woman sleeping around, a double entendre, and a brief nonsexual glimpse of a man in underwear.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink at a holiday party, spike coffee at a diner and swig from liquor bottles. A young child drinks from a liquor bottle in a fantasy sequence, and one man briefly smokes a cigar.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Mostly comic, but a bomb threat, a menacing crew of counterfeit Santas and the parade climax, where the son is in danger until his dad rescues him, may briefly alarm very young viewers.

Worth talking about

Ask whether any toy is worth what this dad goes through, and what his son really wanted from him by the end of the movie.
