Halloween: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R.
The classic slasher that defined the genre, more suspenseful than gory, best for older teens. A masked killer stalks babysitters on Halloween night, and the tension builds slowly toward several murders by stabbing and strangling, with relatively little blood on screen. The opening shows a young boy stabbing his half-dressed teenage sister. Teens smoke a joint, drink beer and have sex, with brief topless nudity, and a family dog is killed. Language is fairly mild for an R. The nudity, drug use and long stretches of dread make it best for 16 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSeveral killings: stabbings, strangulations, including with a phone cord, and a cut throat, plus a wire hanger jabbed into the killer's eye. Some blood, but most gore is implied or off screen. The first murder is committed by a six-year-old.
Language
ModerateSome profanity: s-words, 'goddamn,' 'damn,' 'ass' and 'a--hole,' plus 'Jesus' as an exclamation. Sources did not note any f-words.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo teen couples have sex, under covers with moaning, and are seen before and after. Brief topless female nudity appears, including in the opening scene, and teens are seen in underwear.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTwo teen girls smoke a marijuana joint while driving and hide it from a parent. Teens also drink beer and smoke cigarettes, and a nurse smokes.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSlow-building, sustained terror: the killer watches from shadows and follows the girls through town, and the long final attack on the heroine is full of jump scares and near escapes.
Sensitive topics
- Animal death
Worth talking about
The film is often said to punish the teens who have sex and get high while sparing the responsible one. Talk about that horror cliche and whether it still holds up.
