Black Mirror: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A sharp, disturbing sci-fi anthology best saved for older teens who can handle very dark material. Each standalone episode imagines how technology could twist human behavior, so content varies widely. The worst of it includes a prime minister forced into a sex act with a pig on live TV, bloody stabbings and murders, children and a baby killed, several suicides, frequent f-words, sex scenes with partial nudity, and drug use including LSD and cocaine. A few episodes, such as "Nosedive," are much milder, so previewing helps. The sexual coercion and violence are why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Often graphic and bloody: stabbings, shootings, a saw dismemberment, a severed head, and torture of digital clones. A baby and other children are murdered in different episodes. Sexual violence: characters are coerced into porn and sex acts, including a forced act with a pig.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong profanity in most episodes. Plugged In counted more than 35 f-words in "USS Callister" and about 34 in "Joan Is Awful," plus s-words, "bitch," crude terms for genitals and misuse of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Varies by episode but often frank: simulated sex with partial nudity, a 15-year-old's first sexual experience watched by her mother, pornography as a plot point, and a virtual-reality affair. One episode builds to a coerced sex act with an animal, mostly shown through reactions.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Drinking, drunkenness and cigarette smoking appear often. The interactive film "Bandersnatch" makes LSD use a plot point and includes a shared joint, a teen tries cocaine in "Arkangel," and euthanasia drugs feature in some stories.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Many episodes are deeply unsettling: surveillance, torture, killer robot dogs, demonic possession and people trapped in digital worlds, with bleak twist endings. One episode shows racist abuse of a South Asian woman in late-1970s Britain, and child sexual abuse figures in at least two episodes.
