White Christmas: parents' guide
Best for ages 6 and up. Not formally rated.
A warm, old-fashioned musical that is easy family viewing, though its two-hour length and grown-up romance may test the youngest kids. Two Army buddies turned entertainers team up with a sister act to rescue their former general's struggling Vermont inn. A brief World War II opening includes shelling and a collapsing wall, but nobody is hurt. Adults drink cocktails and one smokes a pipe, and romance stays at the kissing stage. One full musical number fondly celebrates old minstrel shows and name-checks a blackface star of that era; nobody wears blackface, but it still honors a racist entertainment tradition, which is worth a word with kids.
What's in it
Violence
MildOnly in the opening: an Army camp near the front comes under shelling, and one soldier pulls another clear of a collapsing wall. Soldiers carry rifles but never fire them, and nothing violent follows.
Language
NoneNo profanity at all. The strongest it gets is some affectionate teasing between the friends and an old-fashioned insult or two, such as a 'freckle-faced, dog-faced' jab at someone offscreen.
Sex and nudity
MildRomance drives the plot, with a handful of kisses, embraces and close dancing. Men remark on how attractive the sisters are, the dancers wear snug costumes, and the two male leads clown through a song in drag. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults order cocktails at a nightclub and several scenes are set in bars, though nobody is shown drunk. Bing Crosby's character smokes a pipe, and smoking appears in a couple of scenes.
Scary or intense scenes
MildThe brief battlefield opening has explosions and a near miss with a falling wall, which may startle small children. The rest is light, with only mild worry over the general's failing business.

Worth talking about
The minstrel-show song looks back fondly on a kind of entertainment built on mocking Black Americans; use it to explain what minstrel shows were and why they are no longer celebrated.
