The Banshees of Inisherin: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language throughout, some violent content and brief graphic nudity.

A darkly funny but bleak Irish fable for older teens about a man who abruptly ends a lifelong friendship, and the feud that escalates from there. Swearing is near constant, and the violence comes in sudden shocks: a man cuts off his own fingers and the bloody results are shown. A troubled young man is beaten by his father and implied to be sexually abused, a beloved donkey dies, and one death appears to be a suicide. Brief full-frontal male nudity and heavy pub drinking round it out. The self-harm and the animal's death are the likeliest to upset.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

A man chops off his own fingers, and the bloody hand and severed fingers are shown. A police officer beats his son, who is bruised, and is implied to sexually abuse him. Punches, a knockout, a house torched with a man inside, a drowned body.

Language

Strong

Near constant: Plugged In counted about 50 f-words, mostly the Irish 'feck,' plus seven or eight s-words, 'bollocks,' 'wanking,' a gay slur, and misuses of God's and Jesus' names. Characters swear even in church.

Sex and nudity

Strong

No sex scenes. The young man's father, a middle-aged police officer, is briefly seen fully naked from the front while asleep in a chair. Crude talk covers masturbation and whether a man has seen a woman naked.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The men drink pints at the pub every day, and characters get drunk; one turns to whiskey, grows belligerent and blacks out. Pipe and cigarette smoking.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Grim rather than scary: the self-mutilation, a donkey dying after swallowing a severed finger, a corpse pulled from the water, a house set ablaze, and an eerie old woman who foretells deaths.

Sensitive topics

  • Self-harm
  • Suicide
  • Child abuse
  • Sexual assault
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Colm would rather hurt himself than keep a friendship he finds dull, and Padraic's kindness curdles into revenge. Talk about ending relationships honestly, and how small grudges grow.
