Station Eleven: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A moving, slow-burn drama about a flu pandemic and the people who rebuild through art, best for mature teens. It jumps between the outbreak, when a man and a young girl shelter together as society collapses, and 20 years later, when a traveling troupe performs Shakespeare across the Great Lakes. Expect frequent f-words, sudden on-screen deaths, brief drug use, and a cult that sends children wearing explosives to blow themselves up. Romance is mild. The outbreak scenes and a child learning her parents have died can upset viewers, especially after COVID, so we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA man is stabbed without warning, another is shot, a wolf mauls someone with blood shown afterward, and an intruder kills a character. Most disturbing, cult children wearing explosives hug a man and detonate them, killing him and themselves.
Language
StrongFrequent, with f-words and 'asshole' among the most common. Plugged In counted nearly a dozen f-words in the episode it reviewed.
Sex and nudity
MildRomance stays mild: flirting, kissing and dating, plus references to adultery. A woman gives birth on screen without graphic detail. No sex scenes or nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongBrief but shown: a man who had been sober for years drinks whiskey and later uses cocaine, and a key character turns out to use heroin, with his supplies shown, though he is never seen high. Characters drink vodka and whiskey, and one smokes.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe early episodes show a fast-spreading pandemic, panic, a plane crash and corpses, and a child learns by text that her parents have died. A woman dies after childbirth. Later tension comes from a cult, though the tone is more hopeful than scary.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Death of a child
Worth talking about
The troupe lives by the idea that survival alone is not enough. Why might art and stories matter even when people are struggling just to stay alive?
