Somebody Feed Phil: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-14.

A cheerful food-and-travel series in which Phil Rosenthal, creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, eats his way around the world, fine for most families with older kids. Each episode visits one city's markets, restaurants and home cooks, and highlights local charities. Adults drink wine, beer and cocktails with meals, and some segments show butchery or eating live seafood. Swearing is rare. Phil's elderly parents appear in video calls in early seasons; both die during the show's run, and a later episode pays tribute to them. Age 10 accounts for the drinking and the TV-14 label, though the content itself is mild.

What's in it

Violence

None

No violence between people. Some segments show animals butchered for food and a live octopus being eaten, which may bother sensitive kids.

Language

Mild

Rare. Common Sense found no profanity, while another guide notes some swearing without detail. Expect the odd exclamation from Phil or his guests; nothing harsh is described.

Sex and nudity

None

No sexual content. Affection is limited to hugs and warm greetings with friends, family and the cooks Phil meets.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Phil and his hosts often drink wine, beer, cocktails and local spirits with meals. Smoking appears in background street scenes. No drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Nothing scary. Phil's parents, who chat with him by video in early seasons, both die during the show's run, and a season 6 episode is a tribute to them that may bring tears.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Phil tries foods he is nervous about and usually ends up loving them. What is a food or experience you were unsure about that surprised you?
