13 Reasons Why: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A heavy, controversial teen drama for older teens, ideally watched with a parent if at all. After high schooler Hannah Baker dies by suicide, she leaves tapes blaming classmates, and later seasons follow a lawsuit, a murder mystery and their fallout. It shows several rapes, one of a boy with a mop handle, a planned school shooting, heroin addiction, cutting and frequent f-words. Hannah's suicide was originally shown in graphic detail; Netflix cut that scene in 2019, but her death stays central. Many mental-health experts criticized its handling of suicide, so vulnerable teens may be better off skipping it.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic and upsetting. Several rapes of students are shown, including a brutal assault on a boy with a mop handle. Also fights, a fatal car crash, a student's gunshot suicide attempt, a planned school shooting with stockpiled guns, and a season 3 killing.
Language
StrongFrequent strong profanity throughout; one count of the first episode alone found about 4 f-words and 10 s-words, plus "dick," "ass" and misuse of God's name. Also sexual slurs and cruel name-calling aimed at girls.
Sex and nudity
StrongTeens make out, masturbate and have sex, including one fairly explicit scene, though without nudity. A boy shares an upskirt photo, sexual rumors drive much of the plot, and later seasons include an abortion and a homeless character doing sex work.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTeens drink heavily at parties and use cocaine and ecstasy, and steroids drive a season 3 plot. One main character becomes addicted to heroin and is shown high and in withdrawal, and his mother dies of an overdose in the final season.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongBleak and emotionally intense: Hannah's suicide and her parents' devastation, a second student's suicide attempt, panic attacks, hallucinations and PTSD, and a final-season death from AIDS-related illness. Netflix added warnings to the most graphic episodes.
